Guwahati, May 23: In a landmark
announcement at the Rising NorthEast Investors Summit, Reliance Industries Ltd
(RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani unveiled plans to invest a
massive ₹75,000 crore in the North Eastern region of India over the next five
years. This significant investment will span across biogas production,
telecommunications, retail, clean energy, healthcare, and sports development.
Addressing a gathering that included Chief
Ministers from all eight North Eastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,
Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—Ambani outlined an
ambitious roadmap to boost the region’s economic growth, infrastructure, and
employment.
Reliance plans to set up 350 biogas plants
across the region as part of its green energy initiatives. In addition, the
conglomerate aims to create over 2.5 million direct and indirect employment
opportunities, impacting the lives of the region’s 45 million residents.
“Reliance has invested around ₹30,000 crore
in the North-East over the last 40 years. Now, we are more than doubling that
with a target of ₹75,000 crore in just the next five years,” Ambani said.
Reliance Jio, the group’s telecom arm, has
already brought 5G services to 90% of the region’s population, with over 5
million subscribers. Ambani promised to double this number by the end of the
year. Jio’s mission includes bringing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to schools,
hospitals, enterprises, and homes, ensuring that the digital revolution reaches
every corner of the North-East.
“When talent meets technology and competence
meets connectivity, our North-East will surge ahead,” he added.
Reliance Retail will expand its procurement
of staples, fruits, and vegetables, directly supporting local farmers and
enhancing their incomes. In the healthcare sector, the company plans to
establish a 150-bed cancer hospital in Manipur, providing critical care and
treatment access in the region.
Recognising the region’s rich sporting
talent, the Reliance Foundation will collaborate with state governments to set
up Olympic Training Centres in all eight states. These centres aim to groom the
next generation of athletes to compete on the global stage.
Ambani praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for transforming the North-East from a historically overlooked region to a
dynamic centre of development. “You have brought the North-East from the
periphery to the centre of India's developmental map,” he said.
He concluded by affirming Reliance’s
commitment to inclusive growth: “Under your guidance, we in industry will work
with all Chief Ministers to make the North-East an inspiring model for the
world—showing how progress can respect Mother Earth, bring prosperity to every
home, and unite the nation through development.”
This bold investment marks a significant
chapter in India’s regional development story, placing the North-East firmly on
the national and global economic radar.
